Summary
Cheetara of theThundercatswill soon spin off into her own title, sporting a new look that calls back to the character’s history across the franchise. Earlier this year, Dynamite Entertainment released a newThundercatstitle to critical acclaim, as well as record-smashing sales. Dynamite is now expanding the franchisewith a Cheetara solo book, and the creative team has revealed the inspiration for the character’s new look.
Speaking with Liam McGuire ofLooper,Thundercats: Cheetarawriter Soo Lee shed light on the approach she and artist Domenico Carbone are taking with the book. Lee acknowledged that despite appearing in every incarnation of the franchise, Cheetara is still something of an open book. Speaking of Cheetara’s new costume, Lee gave credit to Carbone, stating:

Domenico Carbone the artist, was the one who took charge of it and I think it makes a lot of sense. I think it reflects the life Cheetara and the rest of the ThunderCats had before the beginning of the series. I think it also shows what the culture of Thundera is!
Even After Nearly 40 Years, the Thundercats Still Find New Fans
Cheetara’s Solo Title is a Historic Moment for the Thundercats Franchise
Although theThundercatsdebuted in the 1980s, and were a product of their time, the franchise has proven to have staying power. Since the original cartoon ended production in 1989, there have been several different reboots, each adding its own distinctive flair to the property. Dynamite Entertainment’s newThundercatsbook stands as one of the most successful reboot attempts to date, selling well over 150,000 copies and earning acclaim from both critics and long-time fans of the franchise. Dynamite’s newThundercatstitle honors its storied past, while simultaneously looking forward to the future.
Giving Cheetara her own book, away from Lion-O, Panthro and the rest gives Lee and Carbone a grand opportunity to develop her from the ground up.

Thundercats: Cheetarais a historic moment for the franchise, as it’s the first spin-off in its history. Cheetara is the ideal character to lead the Thundercats into its new era. As Lee noted, Cheetara is largely a “blank slate,” with ample room for character development. Giving Cheetara her own book, away from Lion-O, Panthro and the rest gives Lee and Carbone a grand opportunity to develop her from the ground up. Dynamite’sThundercatsbook has already done a wonderful job showcasing Cheetara and her abilities, and this new title allows her to grow even more.
“**** Off! I Can’t Believe It”: Thundercats Writer Shares Hilarious Reaction to Huge >170k Sales Debut
In an interview hyping the release of Thundercats #1, writer Declan Shalvey had the perfect, if profane, response to the book’s pre-launch success.
Cheetara’s New Era Begins By Looking Back to Her Past
The Thundercats' Life on Thundera Has Rarely Been Explored
As Lee and Carbone put Cheetara through her paces and help her grow as a character, they will be looking back to her past at the same time. Lee hinted that Cheetara’s life prior to the team’s arrival on Third Earth informed Carbone’s approach. If so, this is another historic moment for the franchise, as the lives of the Thundercats before their exodus from Thundera has never really been explored in any iteration of the property. Dynamite’s newThundercatstitle has taken some bold steps forward, and giving Cheetara her own title is the biggest yet.
