Cool Runnings 2 should be based on this true story

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s bobsled time! According to a Hollywood insider, Cool Runnings 2 is in development at Disney, and there’s already the perfect true story for the sequel’s plot to cover.

Withstreaming servicescompletely rebuilding the entertainment business, marking a sharp decline in cinema sales, studios are far likelier to bet on established IP. As such, reboots and sequels are hot property now whether we like it or not.

Disneyis one of the biggest leaders in this trend, whether it’s the constant stream of live-action remakes or endlesssuperheroandStar Warscontent. Now, the House of Mouse may be turning its attention to a sports comedy classic.

Cool Runningsis loosely based on the Jamaican national bobsleigh team at the 1988 Winter Olympics, and it remains one of Disney’s most beloved underdog stories. If a sequel can capture even half of that charm, it could be the feel-good hit audiences didn’t know they needed.

Although the team was first formed in the early 2000s, a new group was established in 2014, with the lineup including NaTalia Stokes, daughter of Nelson Christian ‘Chris’ Stokes and niece of Dudley Stokes – two of the original members whose stories were told in Cool Runnings.

Speaking to theBBCat the time, NaTalia said, “No one can describe to you what it’s like to be a driver in a bobsleigh until you get in the sled. You seriously don’t remember anything.

“It’s like going on a rollercoaster and closing your eyes. But I knew from the adrenaline rush that goes through your body, I wanted to experience that over and over again. I fell in love on the first run and knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.”

Four years later, the team – led by pilot Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian and brakewoman Carrie Russell – made history at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics when they became the first women’s Jamaican bobsleigh group at the event.

Their Olympic debut didn’t come without drama. Just days before their first run, the team’s coach, Sandra Kiriasis, abruptly resigned and took their sled with her.

BREAKING:JAMAICA, WE HAVE A BOBSLED TEAM HEADING TO BEIJING! 📣It will be fire on ice as#TeamJamaica🇯🇲 secured their spot at the 2022 Beijing#WinterOlympics. This will be the 1st time JAM has qualified in 3 Olympic bobsled events: four-man, two-man and women’s monobobpic.twitter.com/hRd5h7lDlG

But in true Cool Runnings fashion, the story took a heartwarming turn when beer company Red Stripe stepped in, donating a new sled so the women could compete.

At the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Jamaica qualified for three bobsleigh events: the four-man, two-man, and women’s monobob.

While they’ve never won a medal, their journey continued the Jamaican bobsleigh legacy that first captured the world’s imagination in 1988, proving the underdog spirit is alive and well.

This real-life arc is practically made for a Cool Runnings sequel. It has everything: the next generation of Jamaican bobsledders, family ties to the original team, nail-biting setbacks, and moments of pure triumph.
