Heartbreaking Val Kilmer documentary is available to stream on Prime Video now
Val Kilmer, star of Top Gun and Batman Forever, died at age 65 on June 16, 2025.
The star died of pneumonia in Los Angles on Tuesday, as confirmed by his daughter. Kilmer had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, but made a later recovery.
Kilmer’s legacy can be defined by iconic roles in many of the biggest ’80s and ’90s movies, including Top Gun (and its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick), Batman Forever, and Tombstone.

Val documentary is narrated by Jack Kilmer
Val, produced by A24 and released by Amazon Studios, was released in 2021. It comprises of over 800 hours of archive footage belonging to Kilmer, including video footage from his childhood, school life, and the early days of his acting career.
While the footage remained untouched for many years, Kilmer’s cancer diagnosis in 2014 inspired him to tell the story of his life.
Through his illness and tracheotomy treatment, Kilmer lost the ability to speak naturally. The actor wrote the script for the documentary, which is narrated by his son Jack.
The documentary also features behind-the-scenes clips from Kilmer’s movies, alongside his famous co-stars.
Since Kilmer’s death was announced, fellow actors and filmmakers have come forward to pay tribute.
Michael Mann, director of Heat,wrote, “While working with Val on Heat I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character. After so many years of Val battling disease and maintaining his spirit, this is tremendously sad news.”
