Armand Erased Louis & Daniel’s Memories Of San Fransisco

Louis Didn’t Realize How Much Time He Was Missing

In season 2, episode 5,Daniel and Louis talk about their first interview, which happened in San Fransisco in 1973. As the pair attempt to recall the details after Louis attacked the younger reporter, they both realize their memories are incomplete. However, thanks to enhanced audioDaniel received from the Talamasca, his vampire interviewee is able to remember that Armand showed up to berate him for being interviewed. He responded by throwing himself into the sun, causing his boyfriend to pull him back inside. From there, he nurses Louis' burns while turning his attention to Daniel.

As the flashback reveals, Armand was going to kill Daniel before Louis stopped him, instead having him alter the journalist’s memories. However, by reflecting together, the pair realize Louis memories were changed too, meaningArmand wanted him to forget details from hispast encounter with Daniel. When he returns at the end of the episode, he lies to Louis about what happened in San Fransisco, confirming his suspicions. Now that it’s clear Armand manipulated his lover’s memories for personal gain, it could hint at his involvement in a tragic event first put to screen in the 1994 movie.

Claudia (Delainey Hayles) watches as Daciana disappears after throwing herself into the fire in Interview with the Vampire season 2 episode 1

Armand Didn’t Stop Her Execution In The Movie & Book

In the 1994 film, theThéâtre des Vampireslearn that Louis and Claudia were responsible for Lestat’s supposed death, resulting in the pair being taken by the vampiric coven to be executed. While Louis is locked away in a coffin to starve,Claudia is burned alive by the sun.Armand manages to rescue Louis, but, crucially, did nothing to prevent them from being captured, making him partially responsible for Claudia’s death. Similarly, in Rice’s original novel, Lestat arrives and demands their executions, which Armand once again fails to prevent.

In the book, Louis is unable to recover from what happened to Claudia, eventually becoming emotionally distant from Armand. In the movie, however, he actively rejects Armand, unable to conceive of traveling with him after knowing his role in her demise. Since the TV adaptation ofInterview with the Vampirerevealed Armand’s secretability to manipulate memory, he may have erased himself from association with Claudia’s death in Louis' mind. This way, he could continue their relationship without strife, bottling away the bad memories to ensure Louis can’t leave him.

How Armand’s Betrayal Will Impact Interview With The Vampire

Setting The Stage For Season 3

Since Louis was able to unlock his memories of San Fransisco with enough prodding, he might recall more truths about Paris when the story finally arrives at Claudia’s death. This includes howArmand never stopped theThéâtre des Vampiresfrom killing her, no doubt angering him due to their close bond. It’s also possible he doesn’t remember how the theater burned down, which was his doing in both the movie and the book. This is because of how puzzled he was when Daniel asked about the fire in season 2, episode 4, hinting more memories could be lost.

Depending on the extent of tampering Armand did to Louis' mind, a fight scene between the two could happen in the season 2 finale. They might use their vampiric powers to their fullest extent, likely leading to a very messy separation compared to previous iterations of the story. It’s also possible that whatever happens between them sets the stage forInterview with the Vampireseason 3, which could pull its story from a different novel in Rice’sVampire Chroniclesseries. This would likely be a close entry chronologically, eitherThe Vampire LestatorThe Queen of the Damned.

Now thatArmand’s ability to alter people’s memories has been fully revealed, it’s likely his involvement in Claudia’s death will be a major part of season 2’s final episodes. However, since the show is part of the ever-growing Immortal Universe, it’s unclear howInterview with the Vampirewill evolve if this revelation comes to pass. With plenty of reveals yet to come regarding Louis' time in Paris, Armand’s betrayal seems like a shocking, but inevitable, twist as the story continues.
