Summary

For over seven years,Baldur’s Gate 3has been a source of ongoing work for developer Larian Studios, but the studio finally appears to be leaving it behind for good. Although the game released in August 2023, the need for bug fixes and a commitment to adding features and improving weak points resulted in a long series of post-launch patches. This level of ongoing support was never going to last forever, and Larian’s transition away from the game may be imminent.

As reported byComicBook.com, Larian CEO Swen Vincke implied thattheBaldur’s Gate 3update currently in the works could be the last big one that the studio offers. Speaking at a BAFTA masterclass event called “An Evening withBaldur’s Gate 3,” Vincke said that giving players the ability to mod the game, a feature planned for the update,“will be the point where we’re going to say ‘ok, now it’s yours fully.'“Vincke also made mention of the new projects in the work at Larian and established that the team is eager “to move forward and do new things.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 Really Needs One Major Romance Feature From Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Although post-launch support for Baldur’s Gate 3 is winding down, it could use one upcoming romance feature from Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

BG3 & Larian Studios Can Both Have Bright Futures

Finishing work onBaldur’s Gate 3will definitely be the end of an era for Larian Studios, but getting to create new games might come as a relief after wrangling the massive title for so many years. The studio got the greenlight for the project in 2017and released the first act of the game through Steam’s early access program in 2020. Since the full release in August 2023, Larian broughtBaldur’s Gateto consoles, added an extensive epilogue, included a variety of quality-of-life features, and much more.

Earlier this year, Vincke announced that Larian wouldn’t be working onDLC or a sequel forBaldur’s Gate 3, leaving theDungeons & Dragonsworld of the game behind to develop other projects. Although this prerogative might be disappointing to some fans of the game, seeing what the studio comes up with next should be exciting. A directBaldur’s Gate 3successor without the same creative energy behind it would likely be a lot worse than an entirely new game that the developers at Larian are excited about.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Successor Might Look Very Different (& That’s A Good Thing)

The next game from Larian Studios could take a totally different direction from Baldur’s Gate 3, and fans should actually find this exciting.

The modding update makes sense as a final offering, giving the community the tools to keep tinkering with the game after Larian steps away from the process. The new patch won’t open every opportunityfor modders — scripting new story content and creating new environments still won’t be officially supported — but it should make a variety of tweaks much easier to implement. Even without the involvement of Larian Studios,Baldur’s Gate 3should live on for a long time yet.
