The Instigators Footage Highlights How It Differs From Past Damon-Affleck Boston Movies

The Instigators Explores A New Genre

Damon and Casey Affleck first starred together in the Boston-setGood Will Huntingin 1997, a script co-written byMatt Damon and Ben Affleckthat won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The Instigatorsis the latest film from Damon and Ben Affleck’s production company, Artists Equity. As a Boston-set heist movie,The Instigatorsalso bears some striking resemblance to 2010’sThe Town, co-written, directed by, and starring Ben Affleck.

However, it doesn’t appearThe Instigatorswill be a rehash of past Damon-Affleck films set in Boston.Good Will Huntingwas an emotional drama, whileThe Townwas a tense thriller, andit appearsThe Instigatorssets itself apart by being a comedy. This is highlighted in the first footage by Chau, Damon, and Affleck’s humorous line readings, which contribute to the comedic energy of the few seconds of footage. The film’s premise, as Rory’s therapist gets dragged along for the ride, is absurd and comedic at its core.

Ben Affleck & Matt Damon’s New Movie Continues A 27-Year Trend That’s Shaped 5 Of Their Movies

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are working on a new movie together, which will continue one of the longest-running trends in their shared careers.

Casey Affleck, who co-wrote the script, saysThe Instigatorsis a “buddy action comedy"inspired byMidnight RunandButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. However, before the first footage, the film was mostly marketed as a straight heist flick. Based on the first footage, coupled with Casey Affleck’s comments,The Instigatorsappears to be built on a foundation of comedy, setting itself apart fromGood Will HuntingorThe Town. With any luck, the film should also feature a few emotional revelations thanks to Rory’s therapist accompanying them during their getaway.

The Instigatorsreleases in select theaters on August 2 before streaming on Apple TV+ on August 9.
