During Moon Knight’s first starring appearance in Marvel Comics’Marvel Preview #21in 1980, writer Doug Moench suggested that foreign interest in the character had prompted a Japanese TV series focused on Moon Knight to go into development. As it turns out, this was a false claim, thougha JapaneseMoon Knightseries had been planned. This was spurred on by previous interest in the Japanese character of Moonlight Mask, a.k.a. Moonbeam Man, who starred in a series of tokusatsu and anime shows from 1958 onwards, becoming Japan’s first on-screen superhero.

The famous deal between Marvel and the Japanese Toei Company that allowed projects featuring a version of Marvel Comics' Spider-Man to be created was also set to feature the introduction of a Japanese version of Moon Knight.Takuya Yamashiro’s Spider-Manappeared in a number of live-action movies and TV shows back in the 1970s, and has become a cult legend, and the same was set to occur with Moon Knight. These plans were abandoned in favor of delivering a Moon Knight-focused manga series,butthis almost established a shared superhero universe three decades before the MCU.
