A newPower RangersNetflix show has reportedly been canceled after two years in development. Debuting in 1993 as the TV showMighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise has grown to become one of the most beloved and successful in popular culture, consisting of 30 seasons of television across 22 themed shows, three theatrical movies, and a television special. Hasbro Entertainment, the owner of thePower Rangersfranchise, will look to move forward with another creative partner.
Will A Power Rangers Reboot Happen Any Time Soon?
The Franchise Is Looking To Reinvent Itself, But It Could Take Longer Than Expected
A franchise as successful asPower Rangersis unlikely to be off-air for very long, but reinventing and rebooting the established canon is not without its risks. Over 30 years, thenumerousPower Rangersshowshave fluctuated in quality and popularity, andplans for a reboot would no doubt seek to return to the unique and quirky appeal that made it so popular with kids, while also refreshing and updating it for a new generation. Who might be best positioned to facilitate this remains to be seen, but there will likely be no shortage of interested parties.
It is also unclear whether Klein or Entwistle will continue to be attachedto the project. The latter joined the franchise in 2020 to oversee the development of movies and TV shows within thePower Rangersuniverse, so it seems likely that he will continue to be involved moving forward. This will depend on scheduling conflicts, and Entwistle’supcomingKarate Kidsequelis expected to be released in 2025. Meanwhile, Klein signed a two-year deal with eOne in 2022, the company that has been spearheadingPower Rangerslive-action projects.
The development at Netflix falling through will delay any plans for a newPower Rangersseries, but Hasbro and eOne will be keen to get the show back on air as soon as possible. This will mean securing a new deal, and finalizing the perfect team for aPower Rangersreboot. There is also the matter of a fourth planned movie that is expected to involve Entwistle, but it seems likely that the first priority will be to reboot the show. Hasbro is now seeking a new development partner, so perhaps new updates will arrive soon.
