Will The Union Break A Mark Wahlberg Trend?

Wahlberg’s Recent Movies Have Struggled Critically

The Unionfollows a common trend with current movie trailers, in that it reveals a great deal of the plot in just a few minutes. The inciting incident of the film, when Roxanne ambushes Mike into coming with her to London, is revealed, as are many of the action sequences. Even key aspects of Mike’s character arc, as he goes from a blue-collar homebody to a man involved in spy missions, are revealed. WhileThe Uniontrailer is certainly exciting, it will be up to the full movie to live up to the expectations it has set.

Though both Berry and Wahlberg are well-regarded actors,The Unioncomes after a bit of a career slump for the latter. Except forArthur the King, allWahlberg moviesfrom 2020 onward have been rated “rotten” on the notable critics' aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The actor had one particularly dismal score, with the Netflix movieMe Timereceiving a single-digit 7%. While some of the movies have fared better among audiences, that isn’t the case for most of them. Check out a table listing Wahlberg’s various Rotten Tomatoes scores below:

Thus,The Unionhas the chance to either break the actor’s bad track record or fall into the unfortunate pattern thatWahlberg’s careeris currently in. Based on the trailer, the movie has potential, particularly through the inclusion of both Wahlberg and Berry. At the same time, Netflix’s overall action track record is spotty, and the spy genre has many tropes that feel overdone. Audiences can weigh in onThe Unionwhen it arrives on Netflix on August 16.
