Summary

When thinking ofFallout-inspired games, many would likely think of titles in the RPG, survival, or shooter genres. However, one unexpected title might have provided the most realistic insight into day-to-day life in the Wasteland to date.

TheFalloutgames often see players venturing out into the Wasteland to take on a variety of threats from ghouls, super mutants, and mutated creatures such as Deathclaws or Bloatflies, usually in the pursuit of a missing family member of some kind. In the case of most of the numberedFallouttitles - barringFallout 2- this involves leaving the safety of a vault - or relative safety depending on how inhumane the experiment Vault-Tec was carrying out there was - and learning to brave a new world.

Cooking Simulator’s Shelter DLC Saw Players Becoming A Chef In A Fallout-Esque Apocalypse

Using A Different Set Of Skills

A core component toFallout’s gameplay is survival, which involves players collecting various plants, canned food, and meat, which they can consume on the go to help them survive in the harsh conditions of a post-nuclear-apocalyptic society, orharvest and cook at various settlements. One game, however, focused entirely on this side tosurvival:Cooking Simulator.

The aptly-namedCooking Simulator, which launched in 2019,puts players in the role of a chef, with fast-paced and frantic gameplay as they are tasked with completing recipes to satisfy customers. While this would seem somewhat far removed from theFalloutseries, itsShelterDLC - which launched in April 2021 onSteamafter many initially believed it to be an April Fools' joke -re-imagined this gameplay in a nuclear apocalypse clearly inspired by the RPG series, with theFalloutgames iconic “War never changes” line set up and subverted in its reveal trailer.

From here, they can cook recipes that differ greatly from those of the main game, using bizarre home-grown ingredients like glowing mushrooms, or the meat of mutated animals to create different kinds of meals to trade with and assist other settlements.

Cooking Simulator’s Shelter DLC Offers A Look At More Regular Living In The Wasteland

Playing A Less Action-Orientated Role In The Post-Apocalyptic Society

Characters such asFallout 4’s Sole Survivor had military training prior to the day the bombs fell, making them better equipped to survive the Wasteland and take on the threats that inhabit it. However, most survivors won’t have had this and would likely be living a relatively normal life and fulfilling otheressential roles to contribute to their settlementwithout constantly venturing outside its walls.

This can be seen in locations such asFallout 4’s Vault 81, which has a functioning cafeteria run by Maria and Mark Summerset, or the settlement Vault 88, in which players can build their own cafeteria for characters such as Clem to work in. Other characters, such as Vault 81’s Dr. Penske, can also be seen growing several different types of vegetables, with players being able to trade some found in the Wasteland with her to help bolster supplies for the café and better ensure the survival of the vault dwellers.

Residents of Vault 81 enjoy fresh food in its diner in Fallout 4.

Vault 88 appears in theFallout 4add-onVault-Tec Workshopand due to its unfinished state, it can be completely customized like other settlements. Vault 81 is already a functioning facility where its inhabitants are tasked with developing a single, universal cure for every sickness that humanity could possibly suffer from, using the residents as human test subjects, and can be visited after bringing them 3 Fusion Cores.

These roles may not be as action-packed as those of theFalloutseries' usual protagonists, but they are still crucial to building some kind of society again, and would likely be the kind of jobs a more regular survivor would have to carry out on a day-to-day basis. While many did initially thinkCooking Simulator’sShelterDLC was an April Fools' joke, it is a fun way to represent these unsung heroes of many of the Wasteland’s settlements, even if it does have an element of dark comedy to it with the kind of ingredients being used to cook up these meals.
