Summary
Marvel Cinematic Universeveteran Vincent D’Onofrio elaborates on Kingpin’s Marvel future, and whether he’ll appear in theYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-ManTV show. The decision to allow Marvel’s Netflix shows to be part of the MCU canon has allowed one of the best villains to finally be used in the timeline, as D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has returned to screens. WithDaredevil: Born Againcoming up,Kingpin’s MCU timelineis about to get expanded, allowing Vincent D’Onofrio to expand on the iconic character that he has been playing since 2015.
After rumors rose suggesting that D’Onofrio would be part oftheYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-ManTV showthat is coming up on Disney+ later this year, the actor shared some intriguing tidbits about Kingpin’s Marvel usage. At the recent Fan Expo Boston (viaComicBook), D’Onofrio elaborated on howKingpin is in a complex situation due to Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, as he shared the following:

I’m going to transparently say this: You know the whole Marvel-Sony thing, right? So there are characters — Marvel characters invented by Marvel, written by Marvel — that are caught in between Marvel and Sony. And so it takes a long time for them to figure out who is doing what. I just never really know where [Kingpin can show up]. My character is in that kind of situation, unlike Charlie’s. So I don’t know, it’s part of the deal when it comes to playing Kingpin.
Every Way Daredevil: Born Again Can Adapt Marvel’s “Mayor Kingpin” Comic Story (And Every Way It Can’t)
There are some very exciting ways the MCU’s Daredevil: Born Again can adapt the comics' “Mayor Kingpin” storyline (but also some ways it can’t).
Kingpin’s Complicated Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures Character Rights Situation Explained
Kingpin has had different roles for the Marvel audience over the last couple of decades. While the general audience associates him as Daredevil’s ultimate villain after seeing him in the Netflix TV show, Wilson has also been one of Peter Parker’s greatest antagonists in the comics and various comic book media adaptations. People who may have tuned intoSpider-Man: The Animated Seriesin the 1990s will perhaps only have known him as an enemy of the web-crawler, rather than a foe of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
Because Kingpin has ended up being as much of a villain to Daredevil as he is to Spider-Man, it would explain why the rights are being shared between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. This may even go to explain why D’Onofrio’s Kingpin has yet to appear in the MCU movies, especially Tom Holland’sSpider-Manfilms, as it’d have to be signed off by both studios.

However, given that Kingpin continues to get more popular in the MCU audience and has had major roles throughHawkeye,Echo, and nowDaredevil: Born Again, that could be changing in the foreseeable future, as conversations surrounding the character are sure to become integral as his story becomes yet more intertwined with Daredevil. This should makeYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Manall the more interesting when it releases later this year, as its prospective version of Kingpin will be especially notable with this in mind.
